Labour Day Celebration
Labour Day is an annual holiday to
celebrate the achievements of workers. Labour Day originated from the labour
union’s eight-hour day movement which supported eight hours for work, eight
hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest policy.
Many countries like Malaysia associated
Labour Day with international workers day, where we celebrate it on May 1. But
other countries celebrated it on a different date which related with their own
labour movement.
Let see which countries are
celebrating on different date;
Australia
On the 21st of April, 1856, the first
march for an eight-hour day by the labour movement occurred in Melbourne. But
the Labour Day public holiday in Australia vary from different state and
territory. In Australian Capital, South Australia and New South Wales it is
celebrated on first Monday in October. Victoria and Tasmania are celebrating on
second Monday in March and it is celebrated on first Monday in March at Western
Australia.
Bahamas
Labor Day is a national holiday in the Bahamas,
celebrated on the first Friday in June in order to create a long weekend for
workers. The traditional date of Labor Day in the Bahamas, however, is June 7,
in commemoration of a significant workers' strike that began on that day in
1942
Canada
Labour Day has been celebrated on the first Monday
in September in Canada since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can
be traced back to December 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the
Toronto Typographical Union's strike for a 58-hour work-week.
Jamaica
In 1961, Jamaican Chief Minister
Norman Washington Manley proposed the replacement of Empire Day with Labour
Day, a celebration in commemoration of May 23, 1938, when Alexander Bustamante
led a labour rebellion leading to Jamaican independence.
New
Zealand
In New Zealand, Labour Day is a
public holiday held on the fourth Monday in October. Its origins are traced
back to the eight-hour working day movement that arose in the newly founded
Wellington colony in 1840, primarily because of carpenter Samuel Parnell's
refusal to work more than eight hours a day.
Trinidad
and Tobago
In Trinidad and Tobago, Labour Day is
celebrated every June 19. This holiday was proposed in 1973 to be commemorated
on the anniversary of the 1937 Butler labour riots.
United
States
In the United States, Labor Day is a
federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September. It is customarily
viewed as the end of the summer vacation season.[8] Many schools open for the
year on the day after Labor Day.
Pakistan
First
labor policy in Pakistan was framed in 1972, in which May 1 was declared an
official holiday. The creation of the Social Security Network, Old Age Benefit
Schemes and Workers Welfare Fund were also articulated. Pakistan’s constitution
also contains various provisions and articles about labor rights.
